MONSTER TREE SERVICE OF ALEXANDRIA NEWSLETTER JULY 2024

The Importance of Removing Dead Wood from Trees

Dead branches may come down in the next storm and cause damage or injury. Rotting and decaying branches also attract pests and predatory insects that can impact your trees’ health. To mitigate risk, we remove dead tree branches and limbs before they cause further problems.

Safe, Professional Dead Tree Branch Removal Saves Trees

Dead tree limb removal is more common than you might think. Storm damage, constant shade, disease, and age all contribute to the dying and decay of branches. At Monster Tree Service, we salvage the living part of your tree by removing dead branches and limbs and trimming the remaining tree. That way, your tree can spend its nutrients on healthy growth. Our professional arborists are trained to safely remove large, unwieldy, or difficult-to-reach branches that you shouldn’t address on your own.

Why Get Proper Pruning for Your Landscaping

Tree trimming and pruning are complex. We use professional, industry-approved methods to avoid damage that amateurs can easily do to a tree. Monster Tree Service approaches pruning and trimming as both an art and a science: we promote health, safety, and beauty at the same time.

Proper pruning supports tree growth and can help prevent insect and disease issues. It also removes dead or dying branches and addresses localized diseases in tree limbs. With professional pruning services, you can have the healthiest-possible landscape and eliminate potential hazards to your property.

LANDSCAPE FABRIC AND TREES

No one enjoys pulling weeds, right? Maybe you’ve decided to have landscape fabric installed. Here are some things to consider when installing around trees:

Soil Compaction and Poor Aeration:

Landscape fabric, especially if covered with heavy materials like mulch or gravel, can compact the soil beneath it. This compaction reduces soil aeration, making it difficult for tree roots to access oxygen. Healthy root growth requires oxygen-rich soil, and prolonged lack of aeration can suffocate roots, leading to reduced nutrient uptake and overall tree decline.

Water and Nutrient Restriction:

While landscape fabric is designed to suppress weeds, it can also impede the penetration of water and nutrients into the soil. This restriction is particularly problematic for trees, as they require adequate moisture and nutrients for healthy growth. If water cannot penetrate the fabric effectively, tree roots may become waterstressed or fail to access essential nutrients, weakening the tree over time.

Root Girdling and Constriction:

Improper installation of landscape fabric around trees, such as wrapping it too tightly around the base or trunk, can lead to root girdling. Root girdling occurs when roots grow in a circular pattern around the trunk or along the fabric edges, eventually choking off their own vascular tissues. This constriction disrupts the flow of water and nutrients within the tree, causing significant damage and potentially leading to tree death if not addressed.

Tips to Keep Trees less attractive to Pests

Many times, insects are attracted to stressed trees. Just like us, when we get stressed, we get tired and possibly sick. To encourage optimal tree health, we need to remember to keep ourselves and our trees hydrated and have a balanced diet and environment in which to live.
