Trees can have Heat Stress Too!
Proper watering is crucial for the health and growth of trees, particularly during their early years and in times of drought.
Newly planted trees require consistent watering to establish a strong root system. It is best to water deeply and infrequently, ensuring the water penetrates the soil to a depth of 12-18 inches. This encourages roots to grow deeper, making the tree more drought-resistant.
Watering should be done slowly, either using a drip irrigation system or a soaker hose, to prevent runoff and ensure even distribution. 2 important tips:
- Ensure the soaker hose or drip line is not next to the trunk. The fine roots can be distributed under the entire canopy.
- Do not water the tree’s trunk or allow the irrigation to continually spray the trunk of your trees. This can cause additional problems, including diseases.
Established trees typically need less frequent watering, but they still benefit from deep watering during extended dry periods. Mulching around the base of the tree helps retain soil moisture and reduce the frequency of watering needed. It's important to monitor the soil moisture regularly and adjust the watering schedule according to weather conditions and the specific needs of the tree species.

Inspecting trees for signs of problems is essential for maintaining their health and preventing potential hazards.
- Regularly observe the overall appearance of the tree, including its leaves, branches, and trunk.
- Discolored, wilting, or prematurely falling leaves can indicate issues such as pests, diseases, or nutrient deficiencies.
- Look for abnormal growth patterns, such as uneven foliage distribution or stunted growth, which may suggest root problems or environmental stress.
- Examine the trunk for cracks, cankers, or signs of decay, like mushrooms or fungi, which can compromise the tree's structural integrity.
- Pay attention to any sap oozing from the bark, as this can be a symptom of borers or other insect infestations.
- Additionally, inspect branches for deadwood or breakage, which could pose safety risks.
Early detection of these signs allows for timely intervention, whether through pruning, pest control, or seeking professional arborist advice, ultimately ensuring the tree's health and longevity.
When summer storms hit, they can cause tons of damage to your trees and your trees can cause damage to your home, your cars or any target beneath and within the tree’s drop zone.
Caring for your trees with proper pruning, soil health and even PROPER mulching can be first steps to help ensure your trees remain healthy and better able to withstand severe storms.
