Today at Monster Tree Service, I was looking into the fascinating subject of tree rings. Even though Monster Tree Service has lots of experts for me to consult on our blog topics, I prefer to do my own research. So, let’s go straight to what I learned from the Wikipedia page.

I learned another big word: DENDROCHRONOLOGY (derived from a language that not only must be extinct but I’ll bet only a dozen people on the planet can even pronounce…trust me). Anyway, it means tree-ring dating. DENDROCHRONOLOGY is the scientific method of dating based on the analysis of patterns of tree rings, also known as growth rings. I think I learned about this in girl scouts. Each ring represents one year.

I also learned that they sell landscape items called “tree rings” which you place around the base of a tree to prevent weed growth. I also learned that this is a controversial idea and there are right ways and really really wrong ways to install “tree rings”. Now, full disclosure, I am not a gardener. I’ve always wanted to be a gardener and have dreams of sipping tea with lemon while admiring a hard day’s work after working in my garden, but that’s probably never going happen. I can’t get my husband to do it with me as I also envision this to be a fun family activity. Am having trouble with recruitment.

So the moral of the story is to pay attention in girl scouts for DENDROCHRONOLOGY 101, do your research before you attempt to place tree rings around your precious trees, and marry well.
